City News - Join your community on a City-wide Day of Service, Saturday, April 30, 2011, to bring community awareness to the Los Angeles River and watershed issues by mobilizing volunteers citywide through service and civic engagement. “A Day of Service on the LA River” will consist of an array of service projects, community education, and fun-filled activities along the river (from the Valley to South LA). The day will not only reacquaint Angelenos to their City and to one another, but also engage in efforts that will contribute to a cleaner, greener, healthier and happier LA.
The goal is to organize/plan and implement a series of community initiated projects led by local community groups/leaders of all ages in collaboration with Office of the Mayor, elected officials (City, Assembly, Senate, City Attorney), Neighborhood Councils, City Departments, Sponsors, Schools, and the Private Sector.
All the service projects will focus on the LA River and/or the environmental impact of the river. The day of service is not just for those who live along the river but to all reaches of the city. Any community member is urged to submit a service project proposal for April 30th. Project Proposals are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2011.
Types of Projects:
We are open to consider various types of service projects. We will be hosting river cleanups and educational tours of the river but we also want participants to think outside of the box. Activities can include art projects, community festivals, bicycling, theater, picnics, etc.
